Students in grades 3-8 take Terra Nova standardized tests in the fall so that the results will be available to teachers before the end of the calendar year. We have instituted a new science curriculum and texts in Kindergarten through grade 6, and completed the second year of a two-year series in grades 7-8. This school year, the faculty will be reviewing the reading/literature curriculum.

The majority of our kindergarten students are in the full-day program, with 5 students using the half-day option and 3 students using the "combo" option. The transition has been smooth, and Mrs. Schmoller reports all is going well. Of the 22 preschoolers, 2 use the five-day program, 5 use the four-day program, and 3 use the two-day program. Due to the enrollment numbers, we have again hired a preschool aide, Mrs. Dawn Vater, this year.

In a day and age when Lutheran elementary school enrollments are dropping and schools closing, we are thankful for the blessings of the students we have. The Lord has richly blessed us at TSL in many way--more than we can count and far more than we deserve.

Faculty

This year, we were blessed with the same faculty as the previous year with the exception of our preschool teacher, Mrs. Tammy Kuehl, who moved to Lake Mills. We were pleased to welcome Mrs. Sandra Wendland from Redwood Falls, MN to our staff in her place. She is also serving our school by teaching grade 3 in the afternoon while Mrs. Horn runs our remedial program. Mrs. Wendland's husband, Paul, is the new band director at Lakeside Lutheran High School. Of the fifteen teachers, last summer seven were involved in credit course work through accredited institutions, and three more teachers participated in non-credit workshops or seminars. Currently, six of our teachers are licensed by the State of Wisconsin, and the principal is also licensed as an elementary school administrator. Trinity and St. Luke's congregations are very blessed to have teachers of the varied abilities and interests that we do at TSL.

Student Teachers

During last school year, Martin Luther College (MLC) has asked if we could provide a pre-service experience for five student teachers. Because MLC students must complete this pre-service work in the classrooms of licensed teachers in order to complete the requirements for the State of Minnesota licensure, we can anticipate a fair number of student teachers at TSL in the years to come. We have one of the highest percentages of licensed elementary teachers in the WELS.

Volunteers

TSL would not be able to do many of the activities we do as a school were it not for the many volunteers who give of their time to help in so many different ways. The variety of activities they do, as well as the staggering amount of time they put in, is phenomenal! So many people give of their time to volunteer motivated by their Savior's love and the love they have for the children of TSL. Thank you, all, for your help!

Accreditation

This past fall we were informed that our accreditation has been renewed through WRISA (Wisconsin Religious and Independent School Accreditation). Being an accredited school and receiving this recognition means that we have conducted a self-study and annually developed a long-range plan for school improvement. TSL is a great school! How can we make it an ever better school?

Our Wisconsin Synod has now developed their own accrediting agency - WELSSA (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod School Accreditation). Because we have been accredited through WRISA, we can become co-accredited through WELSSA. We have been informed that we qualify for this accreditation and will receive formal notification in April.

In 2007 a new visiting team will come to verify our self-study. That means that in 2006 we will be going through a new self-study process. Preliminary plans for the new study will be completed in mid-2005. We will be looking for many volunteers from our school and congregations to assist us with the self-study. It is not too early to begin considering how you might help in this process. The more parents, grandparents, consecrated lay men and women, and TSL alumni we can have involved, the better the process will be. Please watch for further information in the months to come and consider helping in this way.

TSL Vision

As a result of our previous self-study in 2000, we have completed a TSL Vision. With God's guidance and direction, we need to plan for where we are going as a school. After input from parents, students and faculty, the Joint Board adopted a document that spells out some of our hopes and dreams. Some of the main ideas include:

  • Develop greater family involvement in our congregations and school through family ministry.
  • Expand our Extended Learning Program.
  • Develop a TSL foreign language curriculum for PK-8.
  • Use TSL as an outreach arm of the congregations.

Additional ideas also suggest how we can better serve our students and their families. Copies of the TSL Vision are available upon request.

Committees

Currently the TSL Joint Board has several committees in operation to assist them in their work to receive input and make recommendations on several issues concerning our school.

  • The Committee on TSL Staffing Procedures is investigating ways in which changing enrollment would impact the staffing needs of our school.
  • The TSL ECE Committee oversees our early childhood center and makes recommendations to the Joint Board.
  • A Committee of TSL Extended Education looks at how we can continue to provide these services in the most cost-efficient manner.
  • The Committee on the TSL By-laws has just finished its work with recommendations to the congregations on by-law changes for our school.
  • A committee is in place to review the TSL Joint Agreement.
  • The TSL Inreach/Outreach Committee will soon begin its work looking at ways and means to encourage attendance at TSL both among our members and interested people in the community.
  • The TSL Budget Committee will soon reactivate to plan for the fiscal year 2005-6 budget.
  • The TSL Joint Committee on Financial Matters reviews the TSL financial procedures and operations.

Joint Board

This past calendar year saw the following Joint Board of TSL:
