Trinity-St. Luke's Lutheran School - Hot Lunch Policy
August 4, 2005
Dear Parents: Trinity-St. Luke's Lutheran School will again be serving hot lunch through the Watertown Unified School District. Children may buy lunch for $2.10/meal. Children may also get meals free or at a reduced price if they meet eligibility guidelines. All meals served meet patterns established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Menu We will send home the menus on a monthly basis attached to Tiger Talk. Weekly menus are also published each Friday in the Watertown Daily Times. Please refer to these sources for menu information and note that the menus are subject to change. Dietary Problems If your child has been determined by a doctor to have a disability which would prevent the child from eating the regular school meal, the lunch program will make any substitutions prescribed by the doctor. If substitution is needed, there will be no extra charge for the meal. If you believe your child needs substitutions because of a disability, please contact Mr. Moeller for further information. Ticket Purchases The following procedures will be used to purchase hot lunch tickets during the 2005-2006 school year:
When sending money to school, it would be a tremendous help in the lower grades if you would enclose the money/check in an envelope clearly marked with your child's name and grade. You may combine a family's order for one building in one envelope/check. However, if you have children at both buildings, two purchases will need to be made, one at each building. Withholding Hot Lunch TSL reserves the right to withhold hot lunch from students who do not have tickets. Students who do not have tickets will be allowed to use up to (2) IOUs. Please note that the use of IOUs should be limited to emergency use and every effort should be made by the parents to send money or a cold lunch for their child when they do not have a ticket. If a child does not have a ticket after two IOUs are used, the school will allow them to have a peanut butter sandwich and milk for one day. No food will be provided if a child still does not have a ticket after that point. Hot Lunch Coordinators Mrs. Karen Schadt is the coordinator of the hot lunch program at the Clark St. campus, and Mrs. Cindy Matuszak is the coordinator for the Western Ave. campus. They are responsible for meal serving and clean-up as well as some aspects of the paperwork. They also coordinate the hot lunch volunteer schedule. Hot Lunch Volunteers The success of our hot lunch program depends on volunteers who can assist with serving the meals and clean-up afterwards. If you are able to volunteer once a week, once a month, or once a semester please contact either of our hot lunch coordinators, or leave a message in either school office. We are always in need of new volunteers at any time throughout the school year. Meal Portions The size of the meal portions that are served are determined by the WUSD kitchen following the Department of Agriculture guidelines. "Seconds" will be served depending on the amount of food left and which grades have not been served at that point. We strongly encourage our parents to remind their children of not taking more than they can eat and eating what they have taken. Students are required to take a minimum of three items. Free and Reduced Meals Attached to this letter is an application form for free or reduced meals. All families of TSL are eligible to apply for free or reduced meals. If your total household income is the same or less than the amounts on the Income Chart below, your child(ren) can get free or reduced price meals. The reduced lunch price is $.40. If you now get food stamps or Wisconsin Works (W-2) benefits for your children, your child(ren) can get free meals. An adult member needs only to list the names of the school child(ren), give the food stamp or W-2 case number for each child, sign his/her name, and return the application to the school office. Households must inform the school when they no longer receive food stamps or W-2. A foster child may get free or reduced price meals regardless of your income.
To apply for free or reduced price meals, households must complete the application and return it to school. The information provided on the application will be used for the purpose of determining eligibility and may be verified at any time during the school year by the school or other program officials. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year. Please complete the form with the following information if you do not receive food stamps or W-2: names of all household members and the social security number of the adult household member who signs the application. In lieu of a social security number, the household may indicate that the signer does not possess a social security number. Also, the income received by each household member must be provided by amount and source (wages, welfare, child support, etc.) Please note that at any time throughout the year households are required to report increases in income of over $50 per month or $600 per year, and decreases in household size. A new form should be filled out if these situations occur. Reportable Income - Income is any money received on a recurring basis, including gross earned income. Income includes the following: earnings from work; welfare/child support/alimony; pensions/retirements/social security; any other income. Current Income - Households must report current income on a free and reduced price application. Current income means income received by the household during the month prior to application. If this income is higher or lower than usual and does not fairly or accurately represent the households actual circumstances, the household may project its annual rate of income based on the guidelines for special situations (i.e. seasonal workers, self-employed, etc.). Childs Income - The earnings of a child who is a full-time or a regular part-time employee must be listed on the application as income. However, occasional earnings, such as income from occasional babysitting or mowing lawns, should not be listed the application as income. Alimony and Child Support - Any money received by a household in the form of alimony or child support is considered income to the receiving household. However, any money paid out for alimony or child support may not be deducted from that households reported gross income. If you need assistance completing the application form or have questions on the information requested, please contact Mr. Moeller at your earliest convenience. Please make sure your application is complete. We cannot approve an application that is not complete. Please return the completed application to the school office on the first day of school, or send it by mail to the Western Ave. campus as soon as possible. Mr. Moeller will make eligibility determinations and will inform you by mail of the result of your application within a few days. Please be assured that the family income information you present to the school via the application will be kept in strictest confidence as well as your family's eligibility for free or reduced meals. Meal tickets will not, in any way, identify any child as receiving free or reduced meals. If your application is approved for reduced lunch, your cost will be $.40 per meal per child. If approved for free lunch there is no cost to you. Verification Your eligibility may be checked by school officials at any time during the school year. You may be asked to send papers showing that your child(ren) should get free or reduced meal prices. Fair Hearing You may talk to school officials if you do not agree with the school's decision to your application or the results of verification. You may also ask for a fair hearing. You may do this by calling or writing:
Mr. Timothy Matties, Chairman - TSL Joint Board of Education Reporting Changes If your child gets free or reduced price meals because of your income, you must tell the school if your household size decreases, or if your income increases by more than $50/month or $600/year. If your child gets food stamps or W-2 benefits, you must tell the school when you are no longer receiving these benefits for them. You may then fill out another application giving income information. Re-application You may apply for meals anytime during the school year. If you are not eligible now but have a change (a decrease in household income, an increase in household size, become unemployed, or get food stamps or W-2 for your child(ren)) request and complete an application at that time. Non-discrimination In accordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. To file a complaint of discrimination, write to USDA, Director, Office of Civil Rights, Room 326-W, Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington DC 20250-9410 or call 202-720-5964 (voice and TDD). USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer. Milk Tickets Milk is provided as a part of the meal for those who purchase hot lunch. Students bringing a bag lunch will have the option of having milk with their lunch by purchasing a ten day milk ticket. Milk tickets can be purchased for $2.00 on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday mornings (same days as the hot lunch tickets are sold). Students may also use these tickets to purchase an extra milk to drink with their hot lunch. These tickets will be marked by the classroom teacher as they are used. Morning Break Milk Morning break milk is available to purchase on a yearly basis and is purchased separately from lunch milk. Milk tickets can also be used to purchase a morning break milk if only occasional break milk is desired. *** Thank you for your assistance and support of the TSL Hot Lunch Program. Please direct any questions you might have to Mr. Moeller or the school offices. We look forward to a successful hot lunch program. Sincerely, James R. Moeller, Principal
