The class will use a list of teacher selected bookmarks.
þ To introduce students to browsing the WWW.
þ Have a limited list of bookmarks to choose from and allow students to explore those sites using the hypertext links. For example, from the teacher’s home page.

þ Students can view the monitor as the teacher guides them through a discovery lesson in a relevant subject by using the Web Browser.

Students will extend their skills in other curriculum areas by using the WWW to browse related subjects.
þ Previous ideas again may be used.
þ Teachers should create structured lists of curriculum web sites (such a webquests) for the students to browse.

þ As the teacher makes regular Internet use, add bookmarks to the room computers that students can access on their own.
þ During the students computer time, they must be instructed what site(s) to access to gather information (set a purpose). They should not be doing independent searching during their computer time.

The class will review the proper techniques in handling components and software.
The class will work with teacher selected software.
þ This unit is structured to allow the teacher liberty in selecting which drill and practice, knowledge, talking books, or extension software applications will benefit his or her students.
þ The teacher will have to teach and trouble-shoot the software, therefore it is advised that the teacher be familiar with each application the students are using.
þ It is advisable that the teacher periodically review and watch as the students are working.

Grade 1
Proficiency goals
Students will extended their skill in other curriculum areas by sing the computer for drill and practice, knowledge, talking books, or extension software applications.
Students will develop problem-solving skills through the use of simulation programs.
þ The teacher should be familiar with each of the applications the students are using. Use them to review skills and try to extend the students skills, not just to be used as a baby sitter to take up time.

Proficiency Goals
Students will run teacher selected drill and practice, knowledge, talking books, extension, or simulation software.
Students will begin to coordinate their basic keyboard skills with software that allows them to create short, written documents.
þ It is important for someone to make backups of disks that the students will be using.
þ Provide a purpose for writing so the student’s time is not wasted trying to decide what to write.
þ Let the students experiment and make mistakes; try no to stand and watch over the student’s shoulder. They learn through their mistakes (that is why a teacher must make backups!).

Students will use the drill and practice and simulations programs to extend skills from other curriculum areas.
þ This unit is designed to review the use of prepared software and introduce some new applications periodically throughout the year.

Students will run teacher selected drill and practice, knowledge, talking books, extension, or simulation software to extend skills from other curriculum areas.
þ The teacher is still involved in choosing drill and practice that will benefit the students, but these should decrease in frequency.
þ Simulations or applications that challenge students would also be chosen by the teacher.
þ A reminder to all students that this is an educational opportunity and not video game time.
Unit 4 – Keyboarding (Introduction through Mastery)
Grade K
Proficiency Goals
The class will associate the letters of the alphabet with the symbols on the keyboard.
The class will use alphabet drill and practice applications to aid in learning the letters on the keyboard.
The class will associate numbers with the symbols on the keyboard.
þ Teachers first need to teach those letters and numbers which are used in each application.
The class will use drill and practice applications to aid in learning the numbers.
þ Use these drill and practice applications to extend the students knowledge of the numbers.
Unit 4 – Keyboarding (Introduction through Mastery)
Grade 1
Proficiency Goals
Students will continue making a correlation between the letters of the alphabet and the symbols on the keyboard.
Students will continue making a correlation between the numbers and the symbols on the keyboard.
Students will begin to write words with the keyboard.
þ Try to use a variety of software that encourages students to type full words rather than just letters. Try to have software that allows printing results of writing the students have done.
Students will develop mouse techniques.
þ To introduce mouse skills, there are programs that encourage the keyboard or mouse use to choose letters or words.
Unit 4 – Keyboarding (Introduction through Mastery)
Grade 2
Proficiency Goals
Students will review the location of letters and numbers on the keyboard.
Students will demonstrate the ability to type words or phrases that interact with the computer.
Students will demonstrate mastery of the mouse.
Students will demonstrate mastery of the terms related to the use of the mouse.
þ Teachers should use new applications if available to review these skills.
þ More time may be needed for the location of letters rather than the typing of actual phrases.
Unit 4 – Keyboarding (Introduction through Mastery)

Students will begin to use the correct keyboarding techniques.
þ IT IS IMPORTANT THAT CORRECT TECHNIQUE IS STRESSED. The teacher does not have a lab setting, but some individual guidance and observation is thought to be extremely important. It is at this level that students begin to formulate their typing techniques. Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, UltraKey, Typing Tutor V, Sticky Bear, Mario Teaches Typing, and Jump Start Typing are just a few examples of program to use.

Proficiency Goals
Students will show an improvement in their keyboarding skills over the course of the year. The keyboarding unit should be done before or in conjunction with word processing.
þ IT IS IMPORTANT THAT CORRECT TECHNIQUE IS STRESSED. The teacher does not have a lab setting, but some individual guidance and observation is thought to be extremely important. Encouragement to continue typing without looking at the keys is to be given.
þ Examples of keyboarding programs to be used would include Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, UltraKey, or Typing Tutor V.
Unit 5 – Word Processing (Introduction)
Grade 3
Proficiency Goals
Students will use writing books from CD’s to make basic documents.
Students will demonstrate the ability to create basic word processing documents.
þ Entering text is more important at this time than getting the correct format.
þ One small poem or letter can be used to introduce word processing.
Students will demonstrate the ability to print their documents.
Students will demonstrate the ability to add clip art to their writing using the graphics available.
Unit 5 – Word Processing (Introduction)
Grade 4
Proficiency Goals
Students will be able to use pre-writing software such as Kid-pix or Kidspiration.
Students will be able to input text into a word processing document.
Students will be able to set printer options and print their documents.
Students will become acquainted with common terms used in work processing.
Students will be able to run the spell checker and make necessary corrections.
Students will begin to edit their work by inserting and deleting text selections.
Students will demonstrate the ability to add clip-art to their writing using the graphics available.
NOTE: this unit
may also be used as the culmination of the third and fourth grade keyboarding
units. For example, after six weeks of keyboarding, give the students a written
assignment to be completed using the work processing program. Make sure the
students are saving their work as they go. Do not make the written assignment
so intimidating that they will not complete it in the three week period. The
students will need to have a good background with using the mouse. Make sure
that the students are able to recognize and apply the common terms with the
mouse. Make sure they are backing up their work!
